TartanOne Terms of Service

Welcome to TartanOne — a student-built, open-source platform for Carnegie Mellon University Africa students in Kigali, Rwanda. By using TartanOne, you agree to these terms.
What TartanOne is
TartanOne is a community project, built and maintained by CMU Africa students for CMU Africa students. It is not an official CMU service — it is not operated, endorsed, or guaranteed by Carnegie Mellon University. It is provided by students, on a volunteer basis, as-is.
The platform's source code is open source under the MIT License, available at github.com/tartanone.
Who can use TartanOne
TartanOne is restricted to users with a valid `@andrew.cmu.edu` email address, verified through Google Sign-In. By signing in, you confirm you are a current member of the CMU Africa community.
Acceptable use
When using TartanOne, you agree to:
- Post course and professor reviews that address teaching, workload, or course design — not personal characteristics of individuals
- Submit accurate information where accuracy matters (e.g., bus arrival confirmations, map pin locations, event details)
- Treat other students' contributions — reviews, comments, roadmaps — respectfully
- Not post spam, harassment, off-topic content, or anything that violates CMU's own student code of conduct
Moderation: Content can be flagged by other students. Content that receives multiple flags is reviewed by student moderators, who may mark it under review, remove it, or restore it. Repeated violations may result in your account being suspended.
Professors and courses: Professors may flag a review for moderator attention but cannot have a review removed unilaterally — only moderators make that call, based on the content policy above.
Your content
You retain ownership of the content you post (reviews, comments, roadmaps, etc.). By posting, you grant TartanOne a license to display, store, and moderate that content as part of operating the platform — for as long as your account and content remain active, and as described in our Privacy Policy for anonymized retention after account deletion.
Roadmaps you author may be forked, referenced, or adapted by other CMU Africa students or — per TartanOne's open-source model — by students at other universities running their own TartanOne instance, provided the content doesn't contain information specific to you personally.
No warranty
TartanOne is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind. While we aim for accuracy (especially for things like the bus schedule and survival map), this is a volunteer-maintained student project. Always use good judgment — for example, don't rely solely on TartanOne for time-sensitive transportation decisions without a buffer.
The current maintainers and contributors are not liable for any inconvenience, missed bus, or other inconvenience arising from inaccurate or unavailable information on the platform.
Changes and continuity
TartanOne is maintained by a rotating team of student volunteers, with responsibilities transferred each academic year as part of a cohort handoff. These terms may be updated by current maintainers; the "Last updated" date will reflect any changes.
